We are Chip and Shannon, a couple from New York City. We work in music and fashion.
Last summer, we began to do our own tie-dye for friends and family. With a tarp covering the grass of our front lawn at our house in the Catskill Mountains, we tied and dyed in the summer sun. We were nostalgic for the times we wore the DIY shirts as kids in the '90s. But we also loved how the process brought us together with our loved ones. We shared shirts with our parents, we gave onesies to friends for their babies. We made shirts for each other.
Fast forward to March 2020, and as we have settled into our house while working from home to prevent the spread of COVID-19, we thought about how we could help, even in some small way. Usually in times of crisis, you want to go to the source. That's not possible this time around, and staying at home is one of the best ways we can help. We remembered how much joy tie-dye brought us the previous year, and we knew we had our thing.
Dye for Life is born from the spirit of community, the love of craft and the desire to help one another. We make each batch of our tie-dye garments the old school way, completely by hand. They are hand tied, hand dyed, hand rinsed and washed, and then dried in the Catskill Mountains sunshine.
We take sanitary precautions in washing, drying and preparing orders. And in an effort to keep our cause as sustainable as possible, we source eco-friendly pieces and use recycled packaging as much as possible.
For each batch of tie-dye that we create, we will be donating half of the net proceeds to a grassroots charity that helps battle all of the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
For the current batch, we will be donating proceeds to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit, Michigan. The metro-Detroit area has been one of the hardest-hit areas in the country, and it is also a region that has endured decades-long economic challenges.
We hope you'll enjoy our products and their purpose.
